Alan Hinkes OBE and Russell Moorhouse Interview
Storm Care had the pleasure of speaking with Alan Hinkes OBE and Russell Moorhouse for this month’s Eye of the Storm.
Alan Hinkes is the first British climber to scale the world's highest mountains, at 14 8000m peaks it is considered to be the 'death zone'. They are the most dangerous mountains on the planet, where the human survival rate is measured in just hours. Alan is part of an exclusive club of only 12 people alive, who have achieved this feat; the same number of people that have stood on the Moon’s surface. This achievement is beyond human endurance as many people have perished just attempting this challenge. Alan was awarded an OBE from the Queen at the 2006 New Year's Honours list for his mountaineering expertise and charitable efforts with Water Aid, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, British Red Cross and Mountain Rescue.

New to the mountains and seeking a challenge, Russell Moorhouse is currently wild camping all 214 Wainwrights in the Lake District throughout the year. This is certainly no small feat; Russell has had to endure extreme weather conditions such as torrential rain, snow and gail forced- winds not to mention frozen temperatures in the hight of winter. Preparation and timing are key to surviving this challenge. However, why is he doing all of this? To raise much needed funds for the mental health charity MQ. Russell is aiming to raise £21,000 for the charity to help with research and voluntary work. Please support him with this if you can.

The Storm Care team are truly amazed by the endurance, grit and determination of these two adventurers. As a brand care about maintaining outerwear so that it keeps people staying outside for longer, allowing those to embrace more adventure. As Russell is at the beginning of his adventure, we teamed him up with Alan to give him some motivation, moral support and an opportunity to talk to one of his mountaineering hero’s. Here they share their stories of mental endurance, talk through the challenges faced and what they both have planned next.
