BMC BASECAMP
Last weekend, we headed to Thornbridge Outdoors for BMC’s Basecamp Festival, a gathering of volunteers, climbers, walkers, and all-round brilliant humans who care deeply about the outdoors. We came away feeling inspired and encouraged with a deeper appreciation for the kind of community that keeps the outdoor world moving.
Hosted by the British Mountaineering Council, Basecamp is a celebration of the volunteers who help Britain’s outdoor spaces be accessible to everyone. BMC and it's volunteers work hard to protect the freedoms and promote the interests of climbers, hill walkers and mountaineers

At Storm, we’re all about looking after the gear that looks after you, and supporting the people who make that possible. When Upcycle_kit invited us to join them at BMC Basecamp, we were keen to get involved. We met volunteers from all walks of life, full of energy and a shared love for the outdoors. We chatted about gear care, swapped repair stories, and were on hand to give advise on the right way to care for technical outdoor gear.
The volunteers? Genuinely lovely. Warm, welcoming, and passionate about protecting the places we all enjoy. They’re the reason the UK’s outdoor spaces stay accessible, safe, and well-loved. We left feeling inspired by their dedication and reminded that community care doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s just showing up, lending a hand, and having a good chat.
If you’re a wondering whether to get involved with BMC, whether your interests are health and safety repairs and conservation or being a useful extra pair of hands we’d say go for it .You meet real people doing real things, and you get to be part of something that genuinely matters. Support a trail clean-up, host a skills session or just show up and listen, it’s a chance to give back, and grow closer to the community around you.
Basecamp reminded us that the outdoors isn’t just about peaks and paths. It’s about people. And when those people come together with purpose and kindness, good things happen.
Big thanks to BMC for having us, to Upcycle_kit for inviting us and an even bigger thanks to every volunteer who made the weekend what it was.
