TENT CARE TIPS
Time to get your tent storm ready? When you’re out camping in the winter you need your tent to protect you from the elements, that harsh wind, those rainy nights, and the cold frosts.
A little maintenance now can save you from soggy sleeping bags, damp corners and the dreaded mildew smells later on.
Here’s how to get your tent ready for winter, so it lasts longer and performs better:
Step 1 –
Give your tent a clean. Over time your tent picks up dirt, dust and all sorts of outdoor grime. It might not look like much but the build-up over time effects how well your tent can perform, especially when it comes to waterproofing.
That’s where Storm’s Tent & Gear Wash comes in. It is specially designed to clean technical fabrics without damaging their coatings, unlike regular detergents.
How to use:
- Brush off loose dirt or mud
- Shake the bottle well and spray liberally and evenly over the fabric
- Scrub gently using a non-scratch sponge to lift dirt
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any excess wash
- Leave to dry completely before the next step
Step 2 –
Re-Proof your tent. Even the best tents water repellencey deteriorates over time. UV rays, dirt, and general wear break down the DWR, leaving you more exposed to the elements.
That’s why you need the Storm Tent & Gear Proofer.
How to use:
- Shake the bottle well.
- Spray evenly and generously over the tent exterior
- Use a cloth dampened by proofer to rub over the surface and ensure an even finish.
- Leave to dry for at least 12 hours (overnight is perfect)
Why do you need to do this?
Firstly, cleaning your gear before reproofing it always leads to better results as the dirt on the surface of the item isn’t getting in the way and it allows for stronger bonds to be formed. The cleaner also helps prevent builds up of mildew and mould, something everyone can appreciate.
Having replenished DWR will keep the inside drier, as well as helping the fabric maintain breathability. Often, it’s not that your tent “doesn’t work anymore” it might just need a little bit of TLC to get back to its original performance.
A bit of care now means more adventures, less replacements and a tent that’s always ready, even when the storm clouds roll in.
